But to Him who is able to do superabundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power which operates in us. - Eph 3:20

How to Overcome

Romans 8:17 says "we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” What exactly are we conquering?  How do we do it?  The answer is that we are conquering the power of sin and death, and we do it through the One who has already done it.  Christ has accomplished this on the cross and we partake by believing in Him.

A related concept is that of overcoming.  Rev 3:21 states: “To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.”  What are we overcoming?  The answer is the world, comprising the whole of fallen sinful humanity with Satan as its head. (John 12:31)  How exactly do we overcome?  The answer is in Rev 12:11: “They overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”

The Blood

The meaning of the blood is multifaceted.  Simply put, it is the means by which we enter into the presence of God.

Eph 2:13 – But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

Heb10:9 – Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,

Through Christ's blood we are made acceptable to Him.  Applying the blood requires confession and repentance and is outlined in 1 John 1:7-9:

...if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Through the blood we are able to stand against our accuser.

The Word

The Word is the operation of God and through it, we believe.

Rom 10:17 – comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

Without the Word, there is no Christ on the earth.  If the blood is our protection, then the Word is our only weapon.

Heb 4:12 – For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

This Word is simply the gospel, that Jesus is the Son of God.

1 John 5:4 – For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world-- our faith.  Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
